Dr.Kanam Sankara Pillai,MS.DGO

DR.KANAM SANKARA PILLAI, MS.DGO
Retired Deputy Director, Kerala Health Services.
He was born on 27th July 1944 in Kanam ,in Kotchukanjirappara house.
He belongs to ancient Thundathil family of Vazhoor.
Mr.K.S.Ayyappan Pillai (96 years) ,his nonagenarian father is healthy and alive.
His mother Thankam Raman Pillai ,eldest daughter of Late Kallor Raman Pillai
of Elampally in Anickadu died in 1953.
His ancestors migrated from Kumbhakonam in Tamilnadu to Kanjirappallyand were
farmers and village officers (Pillai annans) in Thekkumcore.
He had his school education in SVLPS & CMSUPS Kanam, and SVRVHS Vazhoor.
His College education was from Kottayam (CMS-1961) & Changanacherry (SB-1962).
He studied in Medical College Trivandrum (1962& 1981-83) and Kottayam.
(1962-67& 1976-78)
He is Surgeon & Gynecologist.
In 1968, he joined as Assistant Surgeon in Kerala Health Services.
He had worked in all types of Medical institutions in Kerala except ESI

He is author of 7 books in Malayalam.
He had created number of Websites on medical & non-medical topics
He was Secretary & President of IMA Pathanamthitta

After retiring as Deputy Director in Kerala Health Services, he is working as the

His wife Santha Punnamparmbil is a Planter in Ponkunnam and is the granddaughter of Late Ayyappan Pillai
Neelakanta Pillai founder of Punnamparambil family of Ponkunnam.
His son Dr.Ajesh Sankar MD , MRCOG is now working in UK and his daughter
Dr (Mrs) Anju Devi Sreejith is MRCP trainee in UK.
He is blessed with two grandchildren ayanika Sreejith (7years) & AbhijithNambiar (5years)

Mundakkayam

Mundakkayam is one of the Panchayats in Kanjirappally Block. Mundakkayam Town is surrounded by number of mountains like Pothenmala , Karadimala, Cherumala, Poovanchimala, Mooppenmala, Vadekkemala,Urumpikkaramala, Peruvanthanam and Parathanam mountains.The Pulluka stream surrounding Mundakkayam later becomes River Manimala. Mala Arayas and Ulladas were the inhabitants of Mundakkayam
In 1847 the CSI Missionary Hentry Baker came there for Hill Mission activities. He coined the name Mundikkayam meaning Heron’s Pool. Between 1875 and 1900 people migrated to Mundakkayam Hentry Baker started two schools there. Kadukaparmbil Ninan and Peedikayil Varghese were the teachers. In 1880 Colonel Munro constructed K.K Road . Following that British started Tea and Cardamom estates. A Travelers Bungalow and a stable were made in Mundakkayam. In 1885 Police Out Post came here. Kalleppalam Bridge was constructed in1888 .In 1890 CSI church was built by Hentry Baker
Government Dispensary was started in 1898.In 1900 Ancha (post) office was started in Mundakkayam John Joseph Murphy, God-father of Rubber Plantation in India came to Mundakkayam in1900. He is the builder of Mundakkayam. Enthayar estate was started in 1904.1900-1930 is called age of Murphy. Rubber Planters Association was started in 1907.People from Kottayam Kozhencherry, Thiruvalla ,Palghat and Manglore migrated to Mundakkayam .Planters’ Hall in 35th Mile was started in1912 .In1914 JJ Murphy renamed it as Mundakkayam Club. Till 1945 only British could get membership in this Club.
The first English Medium School was started in1920. Robinson the Commissioner of Devikulam .The stable was converted to Government Hospital in 1930 started Robinson Market around 1920. .Mundakkayam Panchayat came into existence in 1953. Murphy died in 1957.
